The whole trip, all I could think about was how I didn’t know what I was doing. My nonprofit employer asked me to visit with a donor as a new fundraiser. I had expected pressure to make a solicitation or an agenda that everyone knew to follow but myself. Instead, I had a nice breakfast at a Denny’s, where I and the donor read a devotion and talked about her family. I mentioned my employer once, gave a gift, and on the flight back home, thought, I’m terrible at this.
I called the donor every few months, just to chat. She flew up to visit the nonprofit. The only time we talked about the foundation she represented was when I asked how she got involved and what she’d like to see from us. “Just a page or two about some projects y’all have going on is all I need to see. Can you send that next month?”
And just like that, a five-figure check randomly appeared in the mail.
If you’ve started with heart on important conversations and have let God steward the relationship through you, then trust that any visit you have is not without results. Perhaps it won’t be a check in the mail, but that may not be the aim.
As a fundraiser, if I were to have a worldly mindset, I can’t convince people to give without employing manipulation and worldly tactics that are transactional. With a stewardship transformational mindset, the best way is to notice the journey people are on and engage with them in that moment. It is much more important that donors give out of generosity to God (to any organization, even ones I don’t represent) than for me to hit my revenue goals. It is more important that I pray with donors for the things that are in their hearts and be with them at the moment than check off the boxes in my stewardship plan.
Every visit with a person can bring results. How will your conversations and visits bring the person you are speaking with one step closer to Christ?
